Bi-coastal rock miscreant goes down to the crossroads once again… Above: Geer says howdy; note the LPs on the shelf.

Lord knows we love us some Drunken Prayer around here—that would be MISTER Morgan Geer, the master of his sonic domain who we profiled way back in 2011 as part of our “Best Kept Secret” series. More recently we were found being gobsmacked a little over a year ago by the latest Drunken Prayer video, the Bigfoot-themed “I Saw With My Own Two Eyes Again.”
Now comes welcome word of a new Drunken Prayer album from Geer, who splits his residence between Asheville, NC and Portland, OR. (He is also the current studio and touring guitar player for Freakwater, in case you think you may have spotted him with that band.) Titled The Devil & The Blues (August, on Fluff and Gravy), it was recorded in Asheville at the mighty Collapseable Studios—which is just down the street from BLURT’s new home and RV park—and mixed in Portland. It is described thusly:
“This is a party record. But fans of The Reigning Sound, The Sadies or Freakwater will immediately recognize the droll narratives of sadness, rebellion and wild redemption on this trip through the history of American roots music. Here, once again, Morgan Geer finds common ground at the peculiar crossroads of gospel, soul and 60’s psych.”
Well, all right then! Geer is joined by the rhythm section of drummer Lance Wille and bassist, David Wayne Gay, both former members of The Reigning Sound (Geer, Gay, and Wille were once known as “The Unholy Trio” and they had a cover/video of Public Enemy’s “Bring the Noise” that Bloodshot Records released a while back). Dallas Good, from The Sadies, guests. Stay tuned….
