Best bets for Bob’s boots, indeed….
By Uncle Blurt
Call me a softie, but I’ll take a good live album over a studio recording any day – as my battered copies of Allman Brothers at Fillmore East, Who Live at Leeds and, er, Frampton Comes Alive will offer striking, scuffed testimony. So when news of fresh titles from Sweden’s Crystal Cat arrives, I perk right up. The venerable bootleg label, having lain low during the recent Bruce Springsteen tour thanks to the Springsteen camp offering high quality downloads of all the shows (not that Wrecking Ball 2013 tour boots have been scarce, of course), is currently on a road with a pair of new Bob Dylan and Neil Young titles from the artists’ 2014 roadwork.
First up: Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Stockholm Music and Arts Festival 2014, a 2CD set recorded in Stockholm on August 3. Here’s the description from the transparent tabby herself: “This show was in the closing stages of the European Summer 2014 tour with an expanded version of Crazy Horse. Expect the usual high quality sound and presentation. The set list of this show was as follows: LOVE AND ONLY LOVE; POWDERFINGER; STANDING IN THE LIGHT OF LOVE; THE DAYS THAT USED TO BE; LIVING WITH WAR; LOVE TO BURN; NAME OF LOVE; BLOWIN’ IN THE WIND; HEART OF GOLD; BARSTOOL BLUES; PSYCHEDELIC PILL; CORTEZ THE KILLER; ROCKIN’ IN THE FREE WORLD; WHO’S GONNA STAND UP?”
Then there’s no less than a Dylan box set, somewhat deceptively titled The West Coast Box. No, not an LA/SF collection, but, per the label, a 4CD set featuring “both shows Bob performed in Sweden in the later stages of the European Summer Tour of 2014, in Helsingborg on the 14th and Gothenburg on the 15th . The shows complement each other rather well, as the first is a Tempest based “standard” show and the other a “festival” set with lots of different older songs, with only the final two encore songs the same.”
Tracklisting: Helsingborg 14 July: THINGS HAVE CHANGED; SHE BELONGS TO ME; BEYOND HERE LIES NOTHIN’; WORKINGMAN’S BLUES #2; WAITING FOR YOU; DUQUESNE WHISTLE; PAY IN BLOOD; TANGLED UP IN BLUE; LOVE SICK; HIGH WATER; SIMPLE TWIST OF FATE; EARLY ROMAN KINGS; FORGETFUL HEART; SPIRIT ON THE WATER; SCARLET TOWN; SOON AFTER MIDNIGHT; LONG AND WASTED YEARS; ALL LONG THE WATCHTOWER; BLOWIN’ IN THE WIND
Gothenburg 15 July: WATCHING THE RIVER FLOW; DON’T THINK TWICE IT’S ALRIGHT; JUST LIKE TOM THUMBS BLUES; TO RAMONA; THE LEVEE’S GONNA BREAK; SHELTER FROM THE STORM; CRY A WHILE; GIRL OF THE NORTH COUNTRY; SUMMER DAYS; DESOLATION ROW; TWEEDLE DEE & TWEEDLE DUM; LONESOME DAY BLUES; A HARD RAIN’S A GONNA FALL; THUNDER OF THE MOUNTAIN; BALLAD OF A THIN MAN; ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER; BLOWIN’ IN THE WIND
And then there’s more Dylan, ergo this set from the proverbial Far East: “The 2CD Zepp Diversity, Tokyo 2014 was recorded on the 4th night of Bob Dylan’s Japanese tour, Friday the 4th of April. For anyone keeping score, this was the night that Dylan pulled a surprise out of his hat and dropped ‘Huck’s Tune’ in to the set.”
Well, all right then! You can view the full setlist below. Happy hunting, fellow diggers….
