Show is pure Al, including a Mott the Hoople cover…

By Uncle Blurt

Since it’s no secret we here at BLURT are massive Alejandro Escovedo fans, let’s just cut to the chase: a couple of weeks ago he and his latest combo (he calls it The Alejandro Escovedo Experience, fittingly enough) played a small venue in Texas and now the diligent archivists over at Big O zine have posted it in MP3 format so all of us can enjoy it.

Ground control to major John – shape up, sir.

By Uncle Blurt

Last weekend in London, Berlin’s musical collective s t a r g a z e and its Artistic Director André de Ridder mounted a special tribute concert billed as the David Bowie Prom 2016. Funny birds, indeed…

By Uncle Blurt

While I don’t think I could ever bring myself to attend the annual Glastonbury Festival in England – been there (twice in the ’80s and ’90s), done that (sitting in the mud for nearly 24 hours ain’t a lot of fun no matter what drugs you are on) – but thanks to technology I don’t have to. instead, I can sit down in my La-Z-Boy in my air-conditioned double-wide and check out the audio and video of select G-bury performances. Such as Mercury Rev last week, currently touring in support of The Light In You. It was recorded from an HDTV webcast so the sound is excellent.

Getting down for the upstroke and paying tribute to the late keyboardist.

By Uncle Blurt

The Bernie Worrell tributes and testimonies continue to emerge in the wake of the erstwhile Funkadelic/Talking Heads member’s recent passing. Over at Big O zine, there’s a classic archival recording of Funkadelic  live in ’74 that features Worrell in the lineup:

MP3: Funkadelic – The Sugar Shack, Boston, MA; 1974.

The full tracklisting is below, and it’s a corker, as the saying goes. In the lineup of Funkadelic at the time were Worrell and George Clinton, of course, along with Ray Davis, Grady Thomas, Calvin Simon, Fuzzy Haskins (vocals), Tiki Fulwood (drums), Mike Hampton, Garry Shider, Ron Brykowski (guitars), and Cordell Boogie Mosson (bass).

MP3: Listen to Spirit & Randy California Live 8/28/67 (w/”Taurus”)

spiritmodelshoppromo1

But what would Page & Plant say about track #5, hmmm?

By Uncle Blurt

Always a fan of Cali cult-hero outfit Spirit, and in particular Randy California (who I was fortunate enough to talk to all those years ago), I’ve been following the current court fight in England between Randy’s estate and Led Zeppelin pretty closely. It went to the jury yesterday, June 22, and I can’t predict how it will turn out. But there’s no question that, no matter how it does wrap up, Randy’s early composition “Taurus,” which predates Zep’s “Stairway to Heaven,” is eerily similar to the iconic song.

In honor of Randy, allow me to direct your attention to a pretty spiffy audience recording of the original Spirit combo performing live in Santa Monica.

MP3: Spirit – Santa Monica Civic Auditorium Aug. 28, 1976

It’s a pretty decent audience recording, currently posted at the most excellent Big O Zine, and before you ask, yes, it does feature the band performing “Taurus.” Enjoy.

MP3: Download the 6/3/16 Prophets of Rage Show in Hollywood

PORhwoodFr crop

One of the timeliest bootlegs in recent memory. Take the power back indeed.

By Uncle Blurt

Talk about a fast turnaround – Prophets of Rage, which as we noted a couple of weeks ago is a new supergroup featuring Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk from Rage Against the Machine along with Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Cypress Hill’s B-Real, performed a blistering show Friday night (June 3) at the Palladium in Hollywood, and it’s already up on the web in high quality audio. You can grab it as a free download over at the Big O zine, along with downloadable artwork.

MP3: Prophets of Rage – Palladium, Hollywood, CA; June 3, 2016

Blistering indeed. Billboard called the show “the public rally they’ve been preparing for. Looking down from the balcony, the entire floor is a physical collision course, as the crowd charge at each other like newly liberated cattle, inspired by Morello’s solos, which he performs while doing the splits, setting fire to his own loins before scorching everyone else’s.”

As you might expect, key tracks from Rage, PE and Cypress Hill turned up in the setlist (view it below), and Chuck D. also offered a tribute to the just-passed Muhammad Ali as the group finished their titular song at the start of the concert, saying, “We raise a fist and pray for Muhammad Ali.”

Everybody got all that? Get ready for the Republican National Convention in Cleveland in July ‘cos the band has already announced it intends to be their to perform in protest. Shades of the 1968 DNC….
