MP3: Download Tragically Hip FM Broadcast from ’89

The music world lost another titan this week, Gord Downie, frontman for Canada’s Tragically Hip, and passionate obituaries and testimonials quickly followed. The ever-diligent archivists over at the Big O zine have duly unearthed a fantastic-sounding deep-archive concert by the band, originally broadcast live over CFNY-FM 102.

MP3: Tragically Hip – Spectrum, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; November 30, 1989.

Apparently the 51-minute show has been bootlegged in the past, notably on the So Hip It Hurts CD, but this version is reportedly taken from a new, better-sounding source, an uncirculated off-air cassette master. Check out the tracklisting, below.

MP3: Listen to Mark Lindsay do Raiders, Other ’60s Songs

Still trying to find his kicks, ‘cos he’s HONGRY….

Raise your hand if you are a fellow unapologetic Paul Revere & the Raiders fan. I’ve still got all the original 45s and LPs, and I’ll put much of the band’s oeuvre up with any ’60s garage-rockin’ Nuggets head you’d care to name – the Raiders were just lucky enough to have hit after hit after hit.

Mark Lindsay was the voice of the band, of course, and the heartthrob frontman, sporting the kind of classy ponytail that makes all you man-bun-sporting millennials out there look like cavemen headed off your job at the rock quarry. Lindsay is still performing (Paul Revere also still takes a contemporary version of his Raiders out on the road), and the mighty Big O zine has posted a complete Pasadena concert from August clearly demonstrating what a great voice he still has. There’s a little cheese and schmaltz here and there, but in between the many Raiders classics and a handful of covers like “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” and “I’m Not Your Steppin’ Stone,” the dude still delivers. With that super-duper Husker Du box set of early material from Numero Group looming for a November release, for all the Husker dudes and dudettes make plans to camp out for the box set, here’s a little something you can download and spin at the tailgate party, courtesy the Big O. A whopping 33 cover tunes the group performed 1983-87, ranging from the expected (8 Miles High, I Wanna Be Your Dog, Love Is All Around) to the just plain gonzo, for them at least (Don’t Fear the Reaper, Do Ya, La Grange, and, uh, 99 Bottles of Beear). Sound quality inevitably varies, but still… man, this is fun to listen to.

According to the enterprising fan who compiled the collection, “Rather than take a chronological approach I have designed the first 23 tracks for repeated play with all the best sounding stuff steadily improving from half decent AUDs at the beginning to the SBDs at the end. All the worse AUDs and little snippets and crowd singalongs are from track 24-33 for completeness’ sake. I’ve used cross fades on the first 23 tracks and tried to even out the volume levels to make this as smooth a listen as possible. The rest of the tracks I just used fade ins and fade outs at the beginning and end of each track, the volumes levels were fairly consistent anyway.”

MP3: Download Arcade Fire’s 7/17/17 Milano Concert

Arcade Fire is apparently on the verge of taking a widespread drubbing for their new album Everything Now – it’s released this week, July 28, and already some high-profile early reviews have made it clear that the bloom is finally off the rose for the critical darlings, with extremely lukewarm commentary arriving from Stereogum (here as well as here – the latter for the whole “dress code” silliness) and quite pointed commentary from Brooklyn Vegan (here and, tellingly, here – again, on the dress code flap that had the band lashing out). Pitchfork had already semi-dismissed the title track and first single, doing likewise a few weeks later for second single “Signs of Life” – no small feat, considering it wasn’t all that long ago that Pitchfork served as a de facto fan club for the band. Even Salon, usually a safe harbor of puff pieces, critically speaking, is taking the cynical route by accusing Arcade Fire of being, er, cynical on the record.

So what can a poor boy do, except to… download some live bootlegs in advance of the album release, in hopes of whetting the appetite and as a result being able to ignore the critics. Thanks, then, to Big O zine, for posting the band’s show from Italy last week that was broadcast over the radio and subsequently surfaced at Dime A Dozen.

Let’s electro pop, kids. Depeche Mode is out on tour, supporting their album Spirit, released this past March. Last weekend they performed in Lisbon, Portugal, and the HD television broadcast soon hit the internet, where the good folks at Big O zine scooped it up and now have posted as a free download, along with artwork.

Who out there doesn’t love Yo La Tengo? (Okay, you in the corner, the dude with the Fatomas T-shirt, please let yourself out quietly.) In March the Hoboken heroes mounted a unique concert billed as Yo La Tengo Turned Itself Inside Out that featured additional instrumentation beyond the core three: two drummers, a guitarist, a four-person horn section, and Zeena Parkins on electric harp being processed through multiple effects boxes. The good folks at Big O Zine have now posted the show in its entirety online – via a hot-sounding audiende recording at Dime A Dozen, natch.

Beatles “Pepper’s” 6-CD Bootleg Issued to Compete w/Official 50th Anniv.

File under “B” for…. you know.

So you say you are enjoying that mega-Beatles box released the other day to mark the 50th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band? Y(ou can read all about it HERE on our site.) Well, get set for an additional endorphin rush: The estimable Japanese Label Digital Archives Productions has just dropped its own version that by all accounts is remarkably competitive with the official EMI title, with comparable handsome artwork, intriguing song selection, and very good sound quality.

Titled Sgt. Pepper’ Lonely Hearts Club Band Recording Sessions Chronology, the bootleg is, like its aboveground brother, a six-CD set focusing on studio sessions for the landmark 1967 album and includes extensive documentation of both “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “Penny Lane,” which were released as a 45 and later surfaced on the Magical Mystery Tour soundtrack album.

There are a lot of us here at BLURT who are big fans of Australian rock bands, and Midnight Oil is near the top of the list. So your ol’ Uncle was mighty chuffed when news arrived that Peter Garrett & Co. would be barnstorming across North America throughout May for their “Great Circle 2017 Tour.” Last week they performed in Chicago, and now an audience recording of the show has surfaced on Dime A Dozen, with Big O zine picking up the ball and posting the MP3s, along with downloadable artwork, at their site.
